VERNAL ORCHID Botanical Perfume Solid | Lt’d Edition April 2018
from the spring beauty coffret
Erotic blooms of pink and yellow swell to the humid air as the tangles of roots and branches cascade over tree trunks. Lush, watery landscapes give birth to new green leaves and the vernal pools call out their songs of spring.
Vernal Orchid is a fantasy floral inspired by the pink lady’s slipper orchid that blooms here in the woodlands of New England right around Mother’s Day. It’s my mother’s favorite flower – she has is all over her home – paintings she’s painted, stained glass cabinets of lady’s slipper, furniture with lady’s slipper – and it’s truly one of our endemic forest treasures. Normally we think of wild orchids as being of the tropics or jungle; something far away and exotic, like the vanilla orchid. But orchids grow all over and we have species right here at home to adore.
Since the pink lady’s slipper doesn’t really have an odor, I used the Laelia orchid and my local orchid room at Mt. Holyoke College for smell guidance, as I did for the retired perfume House of Orchids. This time instead of dark and opulent I went with the Laelia’s lemony floral expression … bright yet creamy, sweet yet green, with a complexity that is hard to explain.
I hope you enjoy this mysterious vernal floral and the silver keepsake compact it is held in. The compact is made in the US and is nickel free. The tray insert can be removed or reused once the perfume is gone.
